Healthy Smile, Healthy Heart!

As you may already know, February is heart month. This month, there will be greater focus on heart health issues and raising funds for heart-related research.

What you might not have known is Heart Disease and oral health issues share many risk factors.

Some studies have found that those with periodontal disease are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease. Another study suggests that common oral health issues – such as tooth decay and tooth loss – are almost as effective in predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels!

The theory is that mouth bacteria – which cause gum disease – enters the bloodstream through the inflamed gum tissues and eventually ends up in the same plaque associated with heart disease.

While some experts argue that the link between Gum Disease and Heart Disease may be more coincidental than causal, more research needs to be completed before any definitive link can be established or refuted. Experts are sure of one thing, though: good oral health is a factor in overall health and well-being.

The best way to maintain a healthy smile and a healthy heart?

  • Proper oral hygiene (brush twice daily, floss daily)
